Amanda Nunes destroys Rousey in first round Rousey's future in doubt after defeat Nunes on her beaten opponent: "She's going to retire and go to movies and make a lot of money now. Fast heavy hands from Brazilian Nunes, a renowned vicious starter, stunned Rousey who was returning to the Octagon for the first time since her defeat 13 months ago against Holly Holm in a bid to reclaim her bantamweight crown. A left hook and four-punch combination from the Brazilian as Rousey staggered backwards just before the stoppage was brutal. Rousey's time may be over, certainly against strikers of the power and intensity of Nunes, but without the queen of the armbar, women's MMA would never have grown so popular so quickly.
The headlining bout on that pay-per-view card featured two unbeaten women. She faced the Holly Holm.
The oddsmakers clearly favored Rousey to retain her title. When the fighters stood in the center of the cage to get their final instructions from referee Herb Dean, a scowling Rousey refused to touch gloves when Holm offered before the two went back to their spots against the cage.
Rousey controlled the center of the cage to start the bout, while Holm circled on the outside. Holm was looking to keep Rousey moving and looking to land counters, but most of all, she did not want to allow Rousey to get to the mat where she could work her vaunted submission skills.
Halfway through the first stanza, Rousey did get the fight to the ground, but she could not capitalize on the few brief seconds she had her opponent on the ground. The difference in striking skills became painfully evident as the round wore on.
On the feet, it was all Holm as Rousey gasped for air and helplessly chased Holm around the cage throwing sloppy strikes. In the second round, Holm again forced Rousey to chase her around the octagon.
Then with 50 seconds run off the clock, Holm connected with a left that staggered Rousey, before the champion could get her bearings, Holm set up and waited to land a head kick.
As soon as Rousey turned to face her, Holm uncorked that kick, the impact of which put Rousey down and out. And with that Holm had ended Rousey title reign as well as her unbeaten streak. She lost both of those bouts. Follow me on Twitter. I am a freelance writer who has covered a wide variety of topics over the years.
